American civil rights leader and politician best known for his chairmanship of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and for leading the march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, in 1965, a landmark history of the civil rights movement known as “Bloody Sunday.” He fulfilled many key roles in the civil rights movement and its actions to end legalized racial segregation in the United States.
