Legendary performer sang a mix of jazz, blues and folk music in the 1950s and '60s. She performed and spoke at many civil rights meetings, such as at the Selma to Montgomery marches. She advocated violent revolution during the civil rights period, rather than Martin Luther King's non-violent approach, hoping that African Americans could, by armed combat, form a separate state.
