Had a successful career in Cuba as a nightclub singer before moving to the United States, where from the 1970s she was known as the “Queen of Salsa Music.” Cruz's operatic voice moved through high and low pitches with ease, and her style of improvising rhymed lyrics added a distinctive flavour to salsa.
